Winning Mentors

strategic areas

Winning Mentors was launched in October 2008 in partnership with the SRU and supported by The Famous Grouse.

Top sports coaches in the world will tell you that if you want to become the best, you have to spend time with the very best.  The role of a mentor is not about being part of the day-to-day coaching, but being able to give someone that extra few percent that could make all the difference.

The Foundation aims to role out a mentoring programme across a range of sports.  Our current focus is on delivering a rugby specific mentoring programme in partnership with The Famous Grouse and the SRU.

Rugby programme
To help young Scots reach the highest level, ‘The Winning Mentors Programme’ will provide a number of promising rugby players unrivalled access to the guidance of proven winners - surely no greater way to inspire them to fulfil their potential.

Mentors will share their experiences of how they made it to the highest level of their sport, and will be well placed to guide and motivate the young athletes and help them pursue and achieve their ambitions.  The mentors will have faced many of the same challenges in life that their mentees are now experiencing, so by working together, these athletes will be better placed to achieve their best.

Mentors will provide advice through meetings with their assigned player(s). These will take the form of regular chats both face-to-face and via telephone, watching games to analyse together or position-specific rugby training sessions.  In addition, there will be regular workshops for everyone involved in the programme where they will be given the opportunity to share information as well as chatting to successful individuals from other sports and the business world.
